Other may favor a specific Genre of music and might have an alternative opinion. Vernon Kay, Employee of GC services is of the opinion that Michael was a good entertainer, but he was by no means the best. “What about the others who came before him?” Kay stated. “Personally I don’t think you can ever be better than the ones who paved the way for you or who even who came before you, James Brown was way better than Michael Jackson,” Kay added.

At the height of his career Michael Jackson was undoubtedly the greatest star in the world. Even though his Musical Journey was haunted and accompanied by several speculations that surfaced occasionally in the media. They definitely tried to tarnish Michael’s career. If you are a true fan that should not change your opinion about the Genius behind the microphone,” Stated Amoy Miller, past student of The University of the West Indies, Jamaica. Miller further stated that Jackson was legend and a musical icon that was recognized by the world at large and was unquestionably talented in many ways.

Many have seen his performances, watch his music videos and listened to his music and have drawn a conclusion that he is indeed the best performer that ever lived. Michael Jackson is recognized as the quintessential all round performer, who approached the art of music and perfected it. Others however do not share the same opinion because of other preferences. Has Michael Joseph Jackson done enough to earn the title as the King of Pop music, or better yet is it fair to say that Michael Jackson is the best music entertainer of all time?

IS IT BAD, OR IS IT JUST A REFLECTION OF SOCIETY???

Let’s say you happen to receive several  DVD’s as a Christmas gift and as begin to watch the DVD’s or while reading the Blurb, they begin to inflict a “bad vibe” on you, so to speak. Many would conclude that DVD’s like these promote bad social values. Seems like a meaningless conclusion right?

Let’s flip the script a little, and replace the DVD’s with rap music, listening to Rap music has allegedly caused similar feelings to be imposed upon many of its listeners. Is Rap music a bad influence on society or is it merely a reflection of what the society’s true definition is?

ImageMany have also concluded that rap music displays unhealthy amounts of bad social values, but is this really true Does Rap music really promote violence and sex to the masses or does it simply reflect what sells? It is sad to point out that we live in a society that demands anything that is associated with sexual and violent meanings and in reality if we demand these sexual messages they will always be thrown at us.

“If rap music only teaches society about sex, violence and money it is not good,” stated Rosa Rockman, Manager at Raysway Inc.   Rockman also stated that If Rap music is influential enough to diminish the behavior of our impressionable minds it is definitely a danger to society.

Some might also argue that it is unfair for any individual to conclude that One specific genre of music is improper or dangerous because they just don’t like it, or because they think it has affected somebody else.

ImageJoselynn Kelly a student of Polk state College mentioned that half the people who are of the opinion that a specific genre of music is terrible for society don’t actually listen to these kinds of music; they just join others who believe the same thing.

Image“Why do people constantly blame Rap music, as if it is the main cause for a dysfunctional society”, Kelly stated, “Rap music is not to be blamed, why do we forget to blame our upbringing and the constant lack of family involvement and socialization?” Kelly added.

Many also believe that many of the listeners of Rap music are actually not influenced by its lyrics and in turn do not commit violent and sexual acts. A solid upbringing is inevitable and some are also of the opinion that if parents try to shelter their children from what they considered as being “evil” this will definitely intensify their curiosity and try their best to figure out what is really behind this “evil”

Image“I wish people would stop blaming the media for their actions, we all know wrong from right wrong”, stated Amoy Miller, past student of the University of the west Indies, “I listen to Rap music and I have never killed anyone or dealt with drugs, I really think that as a society we are losing focus, or refuse to pay attention the psychological issues behind all of our problems.” Miller further added.

If we study the true meaning behind any genre of music we will draw an obvious conclusion that, Many of these entertainers and singers are not intentionally trying to impose a negative influence on society and its members, but rather to demonstrate the lifestyles that they live or grew up in.

Image“I mean, everybody has a different opinion on everything, so there is no one answer to many of the controversial issues that affect our society,” Miller added.

So rap music as a genre does not necessarily promote violence, drugs and sex, many agree that it is just a reflection of society and people tend to look past the entertainment aspect of any genre of music. A lot of people will still have varied opinion on the subject at hand.

CAN THE MUSIC YOU LISTEN TO CAUSE YOUR PERSONALITY TO CHANGE???

The late, legendary and talented Reggae Artist Bob Marley once said “when music hits you, you feel no pain.” This is indeed true to an extent. Many people use music as an avenue to seek enjoyment and have fun, whether it is at a party, in the comfort of their own home or even while blasting their speakers and travelling. When our favorite song or particular genre of music come on we often get lost in the music, we sing along with the lyrics, dance  (if we can) and have an amazing time. It is often said that when we fail to express ourselves, the music we listen to can speak for us. But is it really true? Can the music we listen to change our personalities overtime?

Leisa Englert, 20, theater performer and resident of Winter Haven explained that music is an essential ingredient in the day-to-day activities  of many individuals. She also stated that she knows a few of people who have been influenced greatly by the music they listen to.                                                                                                      “I think overtime it can definitely change one’s personality, but they have to solely listen to a single genre of music, also I believe it depends on the listeners age, because the younger someone is, the more impressionable they tend to be.”
kids-listening-to-music Like Englert, Brendan O’hearn,19 ,an Employee of Longhorn Steakhouse also mentioned that music can definitely change an individual’s personality.                            O’Hearn stated that music was made to be influential and that is the whole purpose of marketing, producing and recording music is for people to crave it and never become satisfied.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                “Look around you can see it, it’s everywhere,” O’Hearn stated,” first of all I  am not trying to single out any specific genre of music, but I have a few friends who have become so involved in the Hip Hop culture they now believe that smoking pot and sagging their pants is a cool lifestyle,” O’ Hearn explained.                                           O’Hearn further added that if an individual becomes involved with a particular lifestyle they will try their best to demonstrate actions to reflect that lifestyle or movement.
sagging pants  Englert and O’Hearn were not the only individuals who are of the opinion that music can indeed have an effect on an individual’s personality.
Alessandra  Parrish, 21 and a senior at The University Of Central Florida stated that every human being knows right from wrong and that different individuals were brought up in households that have given them different perspectives on life.   “ Honestly, I can only speak for myself self,” Parrish stated, “I listen to music all the time, whether I’m, working out, driving or even when I’m trying to fall asleep. I am not proud of it, but the type of music that I listen to may not easily accepted by many, and now I have moments where I incorporate slang and other inappropriate dialect in my day-to-day language.”                                                                                                                  dancing to music
Parrish also mentioned that she tries to portray an image of some of the singers that she listens to, she again mentioned that she is not proud of her actions, but she was just shedding some light on the topic at hand.
Unlike Englert, O’Hearn and parrish. Judith Sterling, 47, also a resident of Winter Haven Florida. Had a different take on the topic at h     “when people hear the words “influence and music’ being mentioned in the same sentence they go crazy and start making assumptions that all influences are bad, “Not all Influences are bad, there are good influences to” Sterling also stated that there are individuals who find inner peace and comfort by listening to a particular genre of music.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        “every individual is different, some are affected by the media in different forms, ” Sterling added.

It goes to show that the answer to the question as to whether or not music can change ones personality cannot be answered with a simple “yes or no” Music can definitely have an effect on our lifestyles and personalities, just not in the same aspect.  some individuals are affected in a negative sense and other use music to better their lifestyle and personality.
